Who is Loy….
Hi, I am Loy Young and I have got a question for you?
Adventure - what is it to you?
Racing down the track in an F1 Ferrari?
Heli-skiing in the Alps?
Sailing single-handedly around the globe?
Barehanded bull wrestling?
Orbiting the earth in a NASA capsule?
The ultimate adventure for me has always been and still is seeking to understand the contrast between our spiritual ideals and our human behavior. In spite of our high spiritual principles, religious teachings and incredible scientific advancements, I have found little change in the way we deal with each other over the years. In fact, human nature today appears not to have progressed much from the time of Cain and Abel. Why? - I wanted to know.
The mystery I felt compelled to unravel led me far into the depths of darkness of our human consciousness. That might not be everybody’s idea of fun, but it was pure excitement to me: my destiny was beckoning.
My quest grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and plunged me into four decades of risky adventures and travels over six continents, confronting me with people from all walks of life — from cosmopolitan jet-setters to rural villagers in remote places with tribal cultures and religions all their own. Whenever I found an answer that proved to be beneficial to me and the people around me, I would write and speak about it, teach classes, and use it in counseling with those who sought my guidance. Some of my findings indeed proved valuable, others turned out to be counterfeit or half-truths, spiriting me on my way again.
It was often a perilous journey. I nearly drowned in the sea of opposites many times. Yet the search was not in vain; I did find the answers that I was seeking, which led to even more questions of course.
As the fire storms raged over Southern California this last fall, I was reminded that life can be extinguished in but a few seconds and realized that I can no longer put off what I have felt compelled to do for many years now, to revisit my life’s work. And of course, I am running out of time, my senses are failing me. This race against the ailments of old age turns my project into another exciting adventure. Will I get it all down before my life is over?
Almost everything that I would like to share with you was already written down in my books, pamphlets and papers. However, all this wealth of information lacks structure, a path through the maze. So now I am going through all my writings, some that made its way into books,New Age newspaper columns, articles, class manuals, and others that are still on napkins and on the back of menus stuffed away in shoe boxes.
I only wish I had the time to put it all together, with a good laugh. Most of my discoveries date from a few years back, waiting to be published in a humorous way, one that would make you chuckle. In my way of thinking, teaching through humor is the ultimate feat. I can teach anyone how to turn conflict, especially relationship conflict, on its head by finding the funny side of it. I have even written a “how to” book for humor therapy entitled Die Laughing, Is There Any Other Way?
But last fall those raging fires in Southern California where I now live scared me out of my wits. Loud and clear I heard the clock ticking. I believe it was Mark Twain who once apologized to his friend for writing a rather long letter because he did not have time to write a short one. So here I go, humorous or not.
And just in case I run out of time, I am going to take bits and scraps of what already exists and piece them together, just as my grandmother made her quilts. And this is where I’m going to begin.
