The Soul Game

A Way Beyond Serious Play!

“What’s the Soul Game?” you ask. Let’s start the answer to that with the two words, Soul, and Game.

“Soul” first! One dictionary definition that I like is:

The spiritual nature of humans, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death.

“Game” next! Here’s a definition that I’ve put together that says it for the best:

A competitive activity in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules providing entertainment or amusement.

Certainly the Soul Game is a full-on adventure that I play–with all my heart and soul. It’s LIFE itself, a full-on competitive, activity in which we all contend with each other whether we realize it or not.

Without a doubt, there are rules to the game even though we didn’t get an owner’s manual from the family or at school that clearly states the rules. But that’s also what has provided the entertainment, the high-end drama, you could say—the problems arising from not knowing the rules, which give us the clues to the rules once we overcome the problems. Yes, I know, when we’re in the depths of despair there’s little amusement, just tragedy. But, speaking for myself, when I finally come to realize what each drama” was all about I am truly delighted. I’ll often find myself rolling on the floor with a huge belly-laugh!

An enjoyable clue was realizing that Life very much resembles the movie, Ground Hog Day, starring Bill Murray. If you haven’t seen it—he kept repeating the same day over and over until he got it right. That’s certainly been me, repeating the same scenarios over and over, and if any of my co-actors lost their emotional zest to play with me, there was always another actor or actress waiting in the wings to take over the role.

Why don’t I call it the Life Game or the Human Game? Because each time I do become aware to what is going on, I become alert of that part of me that I think of as my spiritual nature, the soul. I can sense my human movements being carefully directed by something that’s quite outside the human part of me.
